Petroleum -based ink, toner, cartridges etc. represent the only technology available (with a few token "environmentally friendly" products sold), and the industry markets new products every year. With more and more computers and printers arriving at the market every day, we're faced with an endless cycle of waste. According to current statistics, only 5% of empty printer cartridges are being recycled - this means that 95% of these cartridges are simply throwaway and wind up in landfills (as in millions every year).  Some ink in cartridges contains hazardous materials that should not be disposed of in traditional ways. In addition, the plastic in the cartridges take hundreds of years or more to decompose, so whatever you throw away is sure to be around for a long, long time. Reusing cartridges means a significant reduction in both energy and resources. Around a GALLON of oil is used in the manufacturing process of one single laser printer cartridge.
Please don't return used cartridges to the original mfg. (HP, Brother, Dell/Lexmark etc.) with their prepaid label. You are robbing yourself of a good source of money, namely proceeds for your recyclable empties.
